I'm dedicating this page to Stripes! This pattern has been around for ever, but I think, the first significant stripes architecture in and around the Siena Duomo Cathedral in Italy has introduced this to home decor and to the fashion industry. There is also a book written by Michel Pastoureau "The Devil's Cloth: A History of Stripes and Striped Fabrics." -- for someone who wants to learn more.
Stripes can be bold, subtle, modern, traditional, whimsical, or just anything you want it to be. It is a very simple pattern; it is just made of horizontal or vertical lines. Vertical stripes on objects will draw the eye upwards creating a tall effect, on the contrary, horizontal stripes will widen the smaller object or the smaller space. There are infinite ways to draw colorful parallel lines and infinite ways use them.
I've a few snaps of Siena Duomo followed by some elegant sofas for you here...
