As the title says it all... do you really need to find two exact chairs, or two exact side tables, or two exact table lamps for your living space!? What happens when you mix and match chairs, lamps or even sofas! In interior design, the concept of pairing is called as symmetrical designing and mixing is asymmetrical designing. Both designs when implemented well can be appealing, balanced and can become a cozy space.. let me explain how these are done and share some spaces that I fell in love with!
Symmetrical Interior Design also know as Classic Design which is - believe it or not derived from the Romans and the Greeks. In this design, the right side of the room is a mirror image of the left side. The color palettes are typically earth tones, black is typically used to highlight the space and furniture is also not too bold. This design is very easy on the eyes, very soothing and harmonious. But, there is only so much you can do with the space. Here are a few examples...

Asymmetrical Interior Design is the exact opposite of the above! The room is designed without any twin furniture or twin accessories. Most pieces are unique and somehow they all blend with each other. Color, texture and pattern play a very important role in this design. As you can see from the examples below, there is a good mix of colors, textures and patterns that pop up in the room here and there creating harmony and balance. The trick is finding such pieces with character, and when put together in a room is pleasing to the human eye.. what do you think of these spaces below?
